DUI: A Lesson in Humility
In this half-hour special the Director of MADD (Mothers’ Against Drunk Driving), a
sociologist, a news reporter, members from law enforcement, and an attorney-at-law make an
urgent and inspiring appeal to drivers to don’t drink and drive.
Co-hosts Carole Kai and Kimo Kahoano guide viewers through the entanglement of
consequences resulting from drinking and driving. The program delivers the impact statements
from victimized survivors and experts who also educate viewers about the associated statistics –
“Collisions on Hawaii roads due to drinking and driving produce more deaths than guns, knives,
and beatings combined.”
The program profiles a young man who began serving an 18-month prison sentence at
age 17 for negligent homicide after three of his friends were killed while he was driving drunk.
Also profiled in this special is a recovering alcoholic who the criminal court system has
classified as a habitual DUI offender.
The clarion call to not drink and drive is sounded loudly and clearly in this special with
graphic pictures of car accidents, emotional testimonies from some who have lost loved ones due
to a drunk driver, and the heartfelt appeals of professionals who emphasize “a casual attitude
towards drinking and driving is not acceptable.”
